Africa and Dictatorship

Wicked problems in Africa

At work yesterday, my boss was sharing with me news she got from a friend in Myanmar where she has worked before about how the Military who took over government are now making the lives of people more difficult.

She was almost in tears as she couldn't understand while dictatorship thrive in such countries and in Africa, we delve a little further into discussing about Africa, she felt people in Africa already gave up their lives and can't battle with bad leadership in the continent and are just okay with the dictatorship on the continent.

I told her I kind of disagree with that opinion and draw her attention back to the ENDSARS protest in October 2020 and many more activities youths across Africa are implementing and standing up to the power that be.

I said to her that I am particularly proud of youths in Africa and I believe the continent is emerging and rising to her challenges but we have a long way to go and the only realistic thinking is never to play catch up with the western world but look inward and use our human capacity to develop the continent.

I further explained to her why I felt her thought was that people are giving up in Africa to dictator leaders. I told her wicked problems exist in most part of the continent and these problems are created by us, a place like my country Nigeria where education which most of the masses see has their escape and path to greatness has been made not to be a quality institution. Talk about the judiciary which should be the go to institution when we need justice, rather it has been bought over by the government.

The health system is another big chunk of the problem, where the poorest of the poor are paying out of pocket for health care, yet with poor quality services but these politician can always find their way out of the country to seek quality health care abroad.

Hardly will you see a health institution that is up to standard from the primary health to the tertiary. The ripple effect of this are felt everywhere , increasing the poverty rate in the country. I told her because these politicians makes the basic social amenities so hard to reach the people, and people now focus more on how to survive in their daily lives makes it very hard to see the prosperity, tenacity and the resolve of most African people as they are working hard to grow the continent.

She was speechless and moved to tears, well, it is what it is, this is the wicked problems and challenges of most African countries but I believe Africa’s future is bright – with an economic pulse infused with new commercial vibrancy, widespread growth across sectors, new creative surges in its fashion and entertainment and an emergence of social saviors who augment inefficient governments.

What do you think about wicked problems in Africa and dictatorship?
